This edition of Conference Conversations followed the official close of the Conference on the Future of Europe on 9 May and the presentation of the final report to the presidents of the three main EU institutions. We brought together two key players to take stock of the Conference and discuss how the results can and will be taken forward.
Our panellists discussed whether they see a future for the Conference and how the perspectives on the Conference outcomes could look like in the months and years to come. How will the interinstitutional cooperation in taking the citizens’ proposals forward continue? How has the Conference changed discussions on participatory democracy in the EU? Is there an institutional appetite to encourage more such exercises in participatory democracy to change the status quo? Can, and should, citizens be involved in EU decision-making on a more permanent or regular basis? What are the institutional perspectives on holding a Convention and possible treaty changes? And how can one make sure that the Union will reform itself in light of the new era we live in since the war of aggression against Ukraine?
