2nd Democracy Reform Conversation

Beyond the elections: What’s next for European democracy?

In the second edition of Democracy Conversations we turned to the question what is next for European democracy beyond elections. The European elections 2024, the major milestone and test for the European democracy, is fast approaching. However, under the present conditions, when political and policy issues at stake are complex but citizens’ trust in mainstream politics is waning, are the elections still enough to keep European democracy running? Does EU representative democracy suffice? What added value can participatory democracy offer, and what role should citizens play in the EU context? What steps should be taken in the direction of better citizen engagement? Last but not least, how can both representative and participatory democracy help to defend, deepen and improve European democracy and regain citizens’ trust in politics and political leaders?
