In light of a fundamentally changing geopolitical and geo-economic environment, including a potential enlargement to 30+ member states, more and more voices are calling for a reform of the European Union (EU). However, EU institutions and member states neither agree on the process nor the level of ambition when it comes to preparing the Union for the future. Is there a need to amend the EU’s existing primary law or is it sufficient to introduce reforms in the framework of the Lisbon Treaty? Which policy reforms will be necessary to prepare for a widening of the EU? Must the EU27 identify a way to link the roadmaps towards EU reform and enlargement and (how) should this be reflected in the 2024-2029 Strategic Agenda? And could a higher level of citizens’ participation help the Union and its members to move the European integration forward in the coming years?
These and other questions will be discussed in this online Policy Dialogue, which takes place in the framework of the EU Democracy Reform Observatory’s “Democracy Reform Conversations”.
The EU Democracy Reform Observatory is a joint initiative of Bertelsmann Stiftung, European Policy Centre, King Baudouin Foundation, and Stiftung Mercator, to foster debate on modernising European democracy.
